Turning your web portal into Android, iOS and desktop apps

You may not need to build an app from scratch. If you already have a good web portal, it can become store-ready apps in weeks.

Many organisations already have a web portal for students, customers or staff, and are then asked: "Is there an app?" Building separate native apps means paying for the same features two or three more times. There is usually a better route.

One codebase, every device

Tools such as Capacitor package a web application as real Android and iOS apps, and Electron does the same for Windows and macOS. The screens your users already know stay the same, and new features arrive on every platform at once.

What makes it a real app

App stores reject apps that are only a website in a frame. The difference is in the native touches:

  • Push notifications for reminders, results and announcements.
  • Offline screens, and content that downloads for use without data.
  • Camera and QR scanning, file downloads and sharing.
  • A smooth login that remembers the user securely.
  • Your own name, icon and splash screen in the store.

What usually needs to change in the portal

  • Screens that work well on small phones.
  • A login suited to apps, with tokens rather than only browser sessions.
  • A few API endpoints for the native features.

The part people forget: staying in the store

Publishing is not the end. Google Play raises its minimum target Android version every year, Apple updates iOS, and both stores update their privacy requirements. A yearly maintenance plan keeps the app available and working.
